HISTORY AND BACKGROUND
Sandy Jenkins
Plungettes was formed in July 2001 by a group of enthusiastic women who shared Sandy Jenkins' dream of a Republican Ladies Drill Team that supported the Republican Party to quell the idea that Republican Women were "no fun". Originally called the Burnet County Plungettes the name was changed to the Hill Country Plungettes to accommodate and recognize members from surrounding counties, i.e., Llano, Travis, etc.
That first year was a very busy year. Our first parade was the Oatmeal Festival Parade in Bertram. Our uniforms were blue jean shorts, a white T-shirt imprinted with "Republicans Care" and the Texas Flag, a red, white and blue visor and tennis shoes.
Plungettes performed anywhere we were invited. We added new routines; new cropped blue jean pants that matched and a straw hat painted like the Texas State flag. Some of the first events where we marched included: Texas Federation of Republican Women's State Convention, Governor's Inaugural Parade, San Antonio Fiesta Battle of Flowers, as well as local parades and events supporting Republican candidates.
Other significant events include the Tyler Rose Parade, St. Patrick's Sweet Potato Parade in Jackson, Mississippi, Fourth of July Parade in San Diego, California, 100th Anniversary Parade in Las Vegas.
Plungettes have been seen on "Out On The Porch with Jim Swift", NBC, Austin. We led the first annual Marble Falls Christmas Light Up Parade in 2006. We returned to Las Vegas for the Helldorado Parade and were an outstanding success. Plungettes have been recognized for our performances, receiving ribbons and trophies which are housed at Sandy's Double Eagle Ranch just outside Marble Falls.
